Shrinkage Expansion Adaptive Metric Learning

چکیده
Conventional pairwise constrained metric learning methods usually restrict the distance between samples of a similar pair to be lower than a fixed upper bound, and the distance between samples of a dissimilar pair higher than a fixed lower bound. Such fixed bound based constraints, however, may not work well when the intraand inter-class variations are complex. In this paper, we propose a shrinkage expansion adaptive metric learning (SEAML) method by defining a novel shrinkage-expansion rule for adaptive pairwise constraints. SEAML is very effective in learning metrics from data with complex distributions. Meanwhile, it also suggests a new rule to assess the similarity between a pair of samples based on whether their distance is shrunk or expanded after metric learning. Our extensive experimental results demonstrated that SEAML achieves better performance than state-of-the-art metric learning methods. In addition, the proposed shrinkage-expansion adaptive pairwise constraints can be readily applied to many other pairwise constrained metric learning algorithms, and boost significantly their performance in applications such as face verification on LFW and PubFig databases.

Composite Kernel Optimization in Semi-Supervised Metric
Machine-learning solutions to classification, clustering and matching problems critically depend on the adopted metric, which in the past was selected heuristically. In the last decade, it has been demonstrated that an appropriate metric can be learnt from data, resulting in superior performance as compared with traditional metrics. This has recently stimulated a considerable interest in the to...

The conventional linear adaptive filters are not effective for discriminating the transient wideband signal components from noise. A recently developed wavelet shrinkage approach is able to maintain the function local regularity while suppressing noise however, it has only been used in function estimation problems. In this paper, a new type of nonlinear filtering method for adaptive noise suppr...

In the present study, the multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS) technique is employed to estimate the drying shrinkage of concrete. To this purpose, a very big database (RILEM Data Bank) from different experimental studies is used. Several effective parameters such as the age of onset of shrinkage measurement, age at start of drying, the ratio of the volume of the sample on its drying...
متن کاملA new time-scale adaptive denoising method based on wavelet shrinkage
The wavelet shrinkage denoising approach is able to maintain local regularity of a signal while suppressing noise. However, the conventional wavelet shrinkage based methods are not time-scale adaptive to track the local time-scale variation. In this paper, a new time-scale adaptive denoising method for deterministic signal estimation is presented, based on the wavelet shrinkage. A class of smoo...
متن کاملThe Impact of Utility Balance and Endogeneity in Conjoint Analysis
A metric utility balance is at the heart of one of the most widely used and studied methods for conjoint analysis. We use formal models, simulations, and empirical data to suggest that adaptive metric utility balance leads to partworth estimates that are relatively biased—smaller partworths are upwardly biased relative to larger partworths. Such relative biases could lead to erroneous manageria...
